Gordon John chooses ‘transformational’ Mertex in growth plans

In a West Yorkshire town rich in textile history, a truly modern soft furnishings group is thriving.

Heckmondwike based Gordon John, which has chosen Mertex to assist in its next stage of growth, is one of a number of businesses upholding the area’s heritage and has remained buoyant throughout the pandemic as people put more energy into upgrading their homes.

Gordon John is a leading supplier of linings and readymade curtains under its Sundour brand. The group added Style Furnishings to its portfolio a decade ago and it has become a prominent and growing segment of the business through sales of made-to-measure curtains, roman blinds, cushions and fabrics. All the group’s products are sold through a network of UK retailers.

Derek Nott, owner and managing director says they had been talking to Reflex Data for some years and knew their system was the market leader.

"As our MTM manufacturing business has become more important to us and shown consistent growth, we knew the time was right to commit.”

Derek’s son Chris, who has been with the company for six years is overseeing the implementation of the Mertex software into the business.

Chris says that stock control was a major factor for signing up. “We wanted more accuracy, especially when cutting into rolls of fabric. Mertex will identify which roll to use, from which location and will calculate the remaining metreage providing greater transparency. We see this giving us tremendous benefits across the factory.

“In addition, with Mertex we will be able to give our customers faster, more accurate information whilst reducing our order processing times.”

With Gordon John’s successful trend-based approach, along with innovation in design and the quality of products created by its highly-skilled Yorkshire team, the future looks bright.

Derek adds: “We are confident that the implementation of the Mertex system will transform our business by providing improved stock control, reduction in lead times, improved efficiencies and the elimination of much of our fabric waste.”

The team at Gordon John are looking forward to the launch of Mertex planned for June 2021 and all the improvements it will bring to the business.
